A Melbourne imam has been spared an immediate jail term for officiating at the wedding of a man in his thirties and a teenage girl.
Ibrahim Omerdic, 62, was earlier this month found guilty of solemnising an invalid marriage after conducting a wedding ceremony between a girl and a man 20 years older than her, in September last year.
The ceremony was conducted at a Bosnian mosque in Noble Park. The girl was 14 at the time and the man 34.
Omerdic pleaded not guilty to the charge but was convicted following a contested hearing before magistrate Phillip Goldberg.
