Call the Midwife's Jennifer Kirby praises 'incredibly brave' FGM storyline
Call The Midwife star Jennifer Kirby has praised the show for being "incredibly brave" after it tackled the issue of female genital mutilation.
The 28-year-old has joined the BBC's hugely popular period drama, set in a Sixties hospital in Poplar, this series as new character Valerie Dyer.
Last night's episode saw a young woman from Somaliland who was struggling with the after-effects of the brutal procedure.
Kirby said: "It's a very sensitive topic. It is something that many people are aware of but don't necessarily talk about. The fact that it has been brought to Sunday night prime-time television is amazing. It can only be a good thing.
