Victorian judges could be given specific powers to demand people to remove face coverings in court but the state's opposition insists it's not a burqa ban.
Opposition leader Matthew Guy says his proposed laws are aimed at curbing a "growing disrespect for our court system", not discriminating against people who wear face coverings.
"It's not a burqa ban, we're talking about criminal bikie gangs, we're talking about youth thugs who are disrespecting magistrates," Mr Guy told reporters on Monday.
But Attorney-General Martin Pakula says contempt of court laws were already "perfectly adequate" to deal with face coverings and disrespect.
