As a young student, Maajid Nawaz was into hip-hop and enjoyed the vibrant social scene in his hometown of Essex.
"I was dancing in clubs. I was an MC, very well integrated at school... I had a very outgoing teenage period," he said.
Born in Southend in 1978 to parents of Pakistani origin, his family spoke English at home and religion played a minimal role in his upbringing.
"My dad tried to take me to the mosque maybe once or twice and by the end of it, I told him I didn't like it," he said.
