Anti-Islam activist sues Facebook for $1m over 'quashing free speech'
by Bianca Hall and Michael Inman
An anti-Islam activist has taken Facebook to the Federal Court, claiming it breached his freedom of political speech by cutting him out of the "patriot" group he administers on Facebook for three days.
Gary Young, of Goulburn, is now seeking more than $1 million in damages from the social media giant, claiming it was "malicious" in its attempts to curtail his right to free speech.
Mr Young is one of two administrators of COMMON CAUSE, a far-right group with more than 2200 members that advocates banning halal food, land sales to foreigners and preventing people on visas from accessing Centrelink payments for more than two children. He frequently writes about the "Islam invasion" of Australia.
