Theresa May uses Tory conference speech to hit out at Tower Hamlets council's 'divisive politics'
by Robin de Peyer
Theresa May today used her Tory Party conference speech to hit out at the "divisive community politics" of controversial Tower Hamlets council.
During a passage on tackling Islamic extremism in the UK, the Home Secretary singled out the borough - run by Britain's first directly-elected Mayor, Lutfur Rahman - for criticism.
She even appeared to suggest the council had similarities with Birmingham and the so-called "Trojan Horse" plot of fundamentalists infiltrating schools - claims which have been strongly denied.
