Crestwood district agrees to boost programs for immigrant students
by Niraj Warikoo
A school district in Dearborn Heights with a growing Arab-American population agreed Wednesday to a comprehensive settlement with the Department of Justice to improve its programs for students with limited English skills and to potentially hire more educators of Arab descent.
The 31-page agreement says that the Crestwood School District "shall take appropriate action to overcome language barriers that impede equal and meaningful participation by" students with limited English skills.
It also requires the district to provide school documents in both English and foreign languages such as Arabic and to promote a more diverse staff. The agreement was released in both Arabic and English.
