A disgraced doctor who was secretly filmed offering to help in arranging the female genital mutilation of two children was struck off today.
Dr Ali Mao-Aweys was caught in a Sunday Times sting mounted by reporter Mazher Mahmood in April 2012 to gain evidence of doctors willing to perform the operations.
The Somalian national, who has private clinics in Haringey and Birmingham, was approached by a woman reporter posing as a patient who wanted her 10 and 13-year-old nieces circumcised. Filmed on a camera hidden in her handbag, Mao-Aweys gave her advice and the phone number of another Birmingham doctor who could perform the procedure. He also suggested that she take the girls to Africa where it was less "dangerous".
