Russian student expelled for hijab sues University for $150
A student expelled from The Krasnoyarsk State Medical University won 5,000 rubles ($150) in moral damages, Krasnoyarsk district court told RIA Novosti on Friday.
The young woman who came to Krasnoyarsk from the predominantly muslim Republic of Dagestan region was expelled in March from the Krasnoyarsk State Medical University for breaking the university's code which prohibits to wear head ornaments in class. The same rules prohibited the wear of clothes that identify religious affiliation.
The court ruled that the expulsion was unlawful, and ordered the university to reinstate the student and pay a compensation of 5,000 rubles ($150).
