Broadcasting a Muslim call to prayer fits in with Channel 4's public service remit, chief executive David Abraham has told MPs.
Channel 4 is airing the prayer every morning during Ramadan - the religious festival which sees millions of worshippers around the world fast for a month.
Speaking at the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, MP Angie Bray said that the broadcast could be viewed as "patronising" and questioned whether Channel 4's public service remit would be better served by programmes on Islam and the Muslim community.
