Queensland Premier Campbell Newman backs magistrate's rights to decide whether Islamic woman should wear full-face burqa in Brisbane court
by Kay Dibben and Robyn Ironside
Queensland's Premier has defended the right of judges to decide what people should wear in their courtrooms, after a Brisbane magistrate questioned whether a Saudi woman should have been allowed to wear a full burqa.
John Costello was sentencing the woman for leaving her baby unattended in a hot car for 45 minutes last year, when he raised concerns about her religious attire.
"This is an Australian court," Mr Costello said.
