Immigrants struggle to find their voice in progressive Sweden
by Andrew Chung
Opposite the shopping plaza with the "100 per cent Halal" supermarket, several shops selling colourful hijabs and a café selling Turkish sweets, there is the busy Malmö Boxningsklubb.
The boxing club is easy to find in the humid basement of a recreation centre in the primarily immigrant enclave of Rosengard. It's about five minutes from Malmö's downtown.
Inside you'll find 15-year-old Ali Shaker, the coach's assistant, putting two dozen squirmy boys and girls, all from immigrant backgrounds, through their drills. The kids think he's tough. But he's also funny and generous with praise.
